Now, how often should you clean your carpets? (Click here for our detailed article on this information!)

Carpet is everywhere! People who understand carpet know that its immense success and consumer acceptance is not due to chance. Few construction materials offer the advantages that carpet does. Carpet is colorful, comfortable and yet easy to maintain. Even though it appears expensive, it is often the most economical choice for floor covering. Carpet and rugs found on the floors of residences and commercial buildings still represent a substantial investment. In light of this, is it not wise to maintain them correctly?

Like all textile materials, the beauty and life of a carpet depends largely on the care that it is given. Proper maintenance can add years of attractive life. Specific maintenance procedures for carpet are determined by where the carpet is installed. In general, proper maintenance involves regular vacuuming and periodic cleanings.

Regular vacuuming is essential as it removes particulate soil that damages the fibers. Vacuuming maintains the surface appearance of a carpet and keeps the level of soil in the pile at an acceptable level. Vacuuming should be done at least once every week, preferably once every 2 – 3 days in soiled or heavily trafficked areas, or use our (Carpet Dry-Tech) suggestion of actually vacuuming the same number of times per week as you have people and pets living in your home (i.e. 3 people & 2 pets = 5X per week). It is important to use a well-maintained, good quality vacuum. Vacuuming removes only particulate soil and surface dirt; therefore, other methods of cleaning are periodically required to improve the appearance of the carpet.

Unfortunately vacuuming alone, although essential, cannot maintain the appearance of a carpet at an acceptable level for long. Depending on various factors, the appearance of any carpet will ultimately reach an unacceptable level. At that stage, professional carpet cleaning is necessary. The frequency of such cleaning will depend on a carpet’s use conditions, soil conditions, fiber type, constructional specifications, color, etc. In general, residential carpet requires cleaning 1 to 3 times per year depending on the traffic conditions described above. Although it might be inconvenient, a ‘no shoes’ policy is one of the best ways to prolong your carpets life since most deep soiled and high traffic patterns are caused from excessive shoe/boot traffic. It is the outdoor soil residue from the bottoms of footwear as well as the abrasive sole materials that will create these intense deep soiled patterns and extreme fiber abuse.

Protecting your carpets…

Once your carpets are clean, you will want to protect it! This is essential in prolonging the life of your carpets! We here at Carpet Dry-Tech will only use the best product proven in the industry for your carpets! The popularity of Dupont’s Teflon ® is largely due to the stain resistant qualities it has. Most people enjoy the confidence of knowing that if they spill something, it can easily be dabbed off of carpet or material with a damp sponge or cloth. Dupont Teflon ® carpet protectant gives you the added assurance that your carpets will be professionally maintained and the possibility of permanent stains drastically reduced.

Teflon ® can also add life to your carpets as well. By sealing the fibers, it can make vacuuming more effective. When soil and dirt are introduced to your carpet and furniture materials, they act as an abrasive enemy. Soil will actually wear the fibers as you walk and move on them. Teflon® prevents the soil from becoming lodged, or entangled, in the fibers themselves, and makes it easier to vacuum soil particles away.

Aside from the abrasive nature of soil, a certain degree of color transfer occurs. Much like having a “fender bender” in your car and having paint transfer colors from one vehicle to the next. Soil will transfer it’s color to the fibers of your carpet (which is mostly due to footwear). This is why heavy traffic areas seem to have a darker color to them. Even though soil can be removed, it may have already transferred color to the fibers. Protect your carpets from “Old Age” by putting a barrier between the fibers and the dirt.

Frequency of Carpet Protectant…

One proper application of Dupont Teflon ® will last you for hundreds of vacuuming’s and approximately two additional carpet cleanings. Our professional recommendation is to apply Teflon ® after your ‘Initial cleaning’. If You then have an average of two more (Re-)cleanings throughout the year (which is recommended), your carpets will remain protected for the entire year and will not need to be reapplied until your next ‘Initial cleaning’.

Consumer Alert!

Shaw Industries and DuPont StainMaster, among other carpet manufacturing companies, are now requiring that in order to maintain their warranties, the consumer’s carpets must be cleaned (at least) annually by a certified professional carpet cleaning technician, as well as reapplying a fiber protector. Carpet Dry-Tech will help you in maintaining your carpet warranty(s).

Along with considering the qualifications and effectiveness of a carpet cleaning company, there is the subject of pricing. There are those who purpose to take advantage of the consumer with “Bait & Switch” tactics. Be aware of low advertised rates like the “$8.95 per room” or “$50 whole house special”, often resulting in higher prices once they arrive. As well, (as some of you have experienced), the old adage “you get what you pay for,” holds true in the carpet cleaning industry.

Pricing sound too good to be true…always is!

Very important to look out for Scams – Knowledge is Power – Whole house cleaning for under $100 which always lead to Bait and Switch tactics Alert…please watch video !
